New Zealand

New Zealand suits creators covering landscapes, adventure and road trips: alpine country around Queenstown, the fiords of Fiordland and the geothermal landscape around Rotorua. Its seasons run opposite to Japan's and Korea's, and filming on conservation land has its own rules. It is a long-haul flight from the other destinations, so it suits longer trips.

Why creators choose New Zealand

Mountains, lakes, fiords and coastline sit within driving distance of each other, and the road itself becomes part of the story. Audiences know the landscapes from film and photography, so the strongest coverage goes past the viewpoint: the weather, the long drives, the people who live there. Māori culture is part of the country; cover it through Māori-led experiences, with permission, and never as a backdrop.

What the New Zealand site covers

The experience catalogue with shooting notes, niche guides, source-market pages and the New Zealand FAQ, including filming on conservation land and drone rules.

Seasons at a glance

  • December to February: summer, long days and the busiest months for road trips and the outdoors.
  • March to May: autumn, often settled weather and autumn colour in the south.
  • June to August: winter, short days and the start of the ski season in the Southern Alps.
  • September to November: spring, changeable weather and fewer visitors.
  • All year: mountain weather changes fast, and Fiordland is wet in every season.

Filming notes

Commercial filming on public conservation land, which includes the national parks, generally needs a concession from the Department of Conservation, and flying a drone there needs the Department's permission too. Elsewhere, drones follow Civil Aviation Authority rules, including limits near aerodromes and over people or private property without consent. Do not plan a shot around a permit you do not yet have.

Combining New Zealand with another country

New Zealand is a long-haul flight from Thailand, Japan and South Korea, so allow a full travel day and keep it for longer trips. The clocks move too: New Zealand is three hours ahead of Tokyo and Seoul, or four while its daylight saving is on (late September to early April), and five or six hours ahead of Bangkok. The reversed seasons can be the point: autumn colour in Japan, then spring in New Zealand.
